A brief history of writing

I’m diving back in.

It’s been quite some time (7, 8, 9 years?) since I’ve made a dedicated effort to write creatively. Once upon a time, I had a blog called Mutually Compatible Baggage. It chronicled my dating life (mostly), accompanied by sarcastic commentary on the happenings of the world. I thought it was hilarious. I think several Twitter followers at the time did, too.

But then my career got serious. You know, “creased slacks and high heel” serious. So I scrapped the blog to focus on adulting. I took a break from writing and Twitter to put my heart and soul into, erm, doing adult-y things. Things that would look good on a resume. Things that society would understand and chalk up to a strong effort at being an upstanding citizen.

I also added some fairly catastrophic chapters to my personal book during this time. It hit me hard and sapped me dry, so creative thinking and imagination took a back seat to survival.

About two years ago, I started my own content marketing business. It’s been an exhilarating, frightening journey, and it’s something I am still dedicated to. Because I get to write.

But somewhere between then and now, the crawling, tickling, tortuous feeling starting winding its way up from my stomach, into my esophagus, and darting out my eyeballs (ouch!). I wanted to write again, creatively.

So I’m back.

I launched a new Twitter account (follow me: @ashleypoynter1) and I’ll be sharing my thoughts along the way. I’m also looking forward to learning how all you writers stay motivated, keep writing, and find new ideas.
